Radio frequency refers to the electromagnetic waves used to transmit data wirelessly, across a frequency range from a few kilohertz to several gigahertz. These waves are everywhere in our daily lives: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile telephony, remote controls, connected devices… and unfortunately also in certain covert surveillance devices.
In the context of detecting spy devices, radio frequency analysis is one of the core techniques used during a TSCM inspection. It involves “listening” to a location’s electromagnetic environment in order to identify abnormal or suspicious emissions. A spy microphone transmitting in real time, a hidden camera sending its images to an external receiver, or a device connected to an unlisted Wi-Fi network all produce radio-frequency signatures that may be detectable.
The tools used in a professional RF analysis range from a simple frequency detector to a spectrum analyser, capable of visualising all emissions present within a given frequency band. A trained operator can then identify abnormal transmissions, roughly locate them and characterise them before carrying out a more in-depth physical inspection.
However, RF analysis has significant limitations that must be understood to avoid over-interpreting the results. A device in standby mode, a standalone recorder with local storage, or a spy microphone that transmits only intermittently emits no detectable waves at the time of the check. This is why a serious TSCM inspection is never limited to a sweep with an RF detector. It systematically combines frequency analysis, a methodical physical inspection of the premises, checks of objects present, and verification of equipment connected to the network.
In a business setting, RF analysis is particularly relevant in meeting rooms, executive offices and areas where strategic information circulates. It is an integral part of Groupe Hypérion’s inspection protocol, both for professional environments and for private homes.
Please note: radio frequency also plays a role in detecting GPS trackers, as some models transmit their position via the cellular network (GSM/4G) and therefore produce identifiable radio emissions during a vehicle inspection.
