Who does it really happen to?

The image of the paranoid tenant is convenient, but inaccurate. Several cases have been revealed in France and Europe in recent years, in Airbnb apartments, rural cottages, and short-term rentals. The affected profiles are varied: couples on weekend trips, business travelers, families on vacation.

The devices used do not require special technical skills. A fake smoke detector, a modified USB charger, or an alarm clock with a built-in lens can be bought with a few clicks for less than 30 euros. This is what makes the threat accessible and real.

The 7 signs that deserve your attention

These signals are not proof. But taken together, or in a sensitive context, they warrant serious investigation.

1. An object «oriented» towards an intimate area An alarm clock, a smoke detector, a picture frame, or a decorative object positioned unusually—facing the bed, facing the shower, facing the living room table—without logical placement justification.
2. A charger or power strip you didn't ask for Spy chargers are among the most common devices. If you find a charger plugged into an outlet for no apparent reason, be suspicious—especially if it's placed in a position with a clear line of sight.
3. A tiny hole in a set piece Spy camera lenses are between 1 and 3 mm. A hole in a frame, a book, a speaker, a smoke detector, or a curtain rod is worth looking at closely, in direct light.

Scan available networks upon arrival and compare them to what is indicated in the accommodation. An unknown network, without a recognizable label, could correspond to a hidden connected device.
7. A persistent feeling of unease This is not a technical sign — but weak signals matter. If something is bothering you that you can't quite name, take the time to methodically walk around the room before settling in.
