Who does it really happen to?

The image of the paranoid tenant is convenient, but inaccurate. Several cases have been uncovered in France and Europe in recent years, in Airbnb apartments, rural holiday cottages, and short-term rentals. The people affected vary: couples on a weekend break, business travellers, families on holiday.

The devices used do not require any particular technical skills. A fake smoke detector, a modified USB charger, or an alarm clock with an integrated lens can be bought in a few clicks for under 30 euros. That is what makes the threat accessible and real.

The 7 signs that deserve your attention

These signals are not proof. But taken together, or in a sensitive context, they justify a serious check.

1. An object “aimed” at an intimate area An alarm clock, a smoke detector, a photo frame or a decorative object positioned abnormally—facing the bed, the shower, the living-room table—without any logical reason for its placement.
2. A charger or power strip you did not ask for Spy chargers are among the most common devices. If you find a charger plugged into an outlet for no obvious reason, be wary—especially if it is placed with a clear line of sight.
3. A tiny hole in a decorative object Spy camera lenses are between 1 and 3 mm. A hole in a frame, a book, a speaker, a smoke detector or a curtain rod deserves a closer look, in direct light.
4. An LED indicator that flashes or stays on Some low-cost devices have light indicators. In a dark room, an infrared or red LED flashing inside an object for no apparent reason is a signal not to ignore.
5. Objects moved between two outings If you notice that an object has moved while you were away even though you are the only person who had access to the accommodation, it is an anomaly worth noting.
6. An unknown Wi-Fi network or an unusual Bluetooth signal Some capture devices transmit via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Scan available networks as soon as you arrive and compare them with what is indicated in the accommodation. An unknown network, with no recognisable label, may correspond to a hidden connected device.
7. A persistent feeling of unease This is not a technical sign—but weak signals matter. If something bothers you without you being able to name it, take the time to go around the room methodically before settling in.
